'and' before a parenthesis

For starters, the script. You should always start with the script, or in this case, lack there of. Chain Letter has a simple premise. People are dying because they don't forward a chain letter. Now, the direction the film could have taken and if they did, would have made it a hundred times more interesting, is a supernatural route.

I'd like to know what role "and" before a parenthesis plays.

I don't know the word expressing the meaning, but I meant the clause inserted into a sentence--"and if they did, would have made it a hundred times more interesting"

Ah. Well, the sentence has a structural problem. You are still reading those poorly written reviews, aren't you? If I try to fix it, then there is no 'and':

Now, the direction the film could have taken that [if they had done so] would have made it a hundred times more interesting, is a supernatural route.
