How do the * and # are vocalized in the context of a call?

Yes, strictly speaking it is an asterisk, but on phones, it is usually called a star.

The hashtag in Twitter jargon was originally called an octothorpe by the director of Bell Laboratories, but it is also called 'pound sign' and simply 'number sign'. This last is what I think most dialers call it.
