and

Hi there teachers,

The following examples have been taken form this link http://www.worldwideschool.org/library/books/relg/historygeography/CodexJunius11/chap19.html, and I don't understand what 'and' implies in these examples:

- The prince lived five-and-sixty years, and begat a son. (Is this use of 'and' with numbers correct? Would you please tell why 'and' is used here?)

- He lived an hundred five-and-sixty winters in the world.

I was taught that 'and' is used for telling numbers after hundred and thousand and that we should omit 'and' after thousand when there're hundreds to follow.

Here are some examples:
- Two hundred and thirty four (234)
- two thousand and seven (2007)

(Dear teachers, am I right about what I've said above? Please correct me if I'm not).

Also, could we say things like twenty and two (to mean '22'), sixty and five (to mean '65')?

Thank you.

  • This is an old style, just as is 'begat'.
  • We do not use either of these nowadays.
