Anchor barrier islands

Hi teachers,

Since the swamps and marshes anchor barrier islands, losing them would put the islands at risk of being inundated by storm surges. In that case, the coasts they protect would be exposed to the full fury of tomorrow's Katrinas.

1. Does "anchor barrier islands" mean the swamps and marshes act like a barrier which forms like islands?

2. Does "they" refer to "swamps and marshes"?

Thank you.

1. -- No, the swamps and marshes act as fundamental 'anchors' (secure attachments) for the barrier islands, keeping the barrier islands from being covered by high waters. The barrier islands in turn protect the coast of the mainland or main island.
