analyzing question tags

Syntactically, is a question tag
1) a subordinate clause to the main clause or
2) is the whole question rather a compound sentence?

ex: She is beautiful, isn't she?

If a finite subordinate clause isn't the direct object, it has to be introduced by a conjunction, right? But I just can't imagine, that the question tag is an independent sentence.

Thanks for any help!

Hi, Let's consider your example. She is beautiful, isn't she? The tag can indeed be written as a separate sentence.
