Analysis / verb form

Hello,

I'm currently preparing for my english test next week. I've read some analysis and im struggeling with the use of "ing" form
For example:

"Later, near the end of his speech, King continues to “preach” this point, for example by stating that he has a dream that “little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.”

"by stating". Is this kind of form allowed? I always thought you should write an analysis in simple present only, which excludes the verb form like "stating"

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I'm aware of the gerund but I'm not sure if it is allowed to use it in interpretations/analysis. I always tried to a void this prepositions like you mentioned because of the gerund.

So its not "forbidden" to write: "The author uses this kind of rhetorical device to provoke symphaty for the unequal situation of blacks during the last centuries by explaining [...]"

No. What made you think it was?
