Analysis of my father's picture

my father's picture

I have learned that there can be three meanings in the noun phrase and then I was wondering if when it is interpreted in each different meaning, diagram is drawn differently respectively?

1. a picture that my father owns -> my father's + picture
2. a picture that my father took/printed -> my father's + picture
3. a picture that has my father's image -> my + father's picture

I was wondering if the #3 analysis is correct?

And all of the diagrams are the same but should I figure it out in context?

What do you native English speakers think?

Thank you so much as usual.

  • Absolutely right!

The context would clarify the interpretation. If it didn't, and it might not, we would have to ask for clarification.

Mister MicawberYes.
Do you mean that this one is right?

my + father's picture

Come to think of it, my father's + picture is correct for the #3 like the others.

And if you say "yes", the diagram for #3 should be different from that of the #1 and #2, right? It is so confusing.

What do you think?

I am not an aficionado of 'diagrams', so I see no difference between my + father's picture andmy father's + picture.
