Maria mit dem
schlafenden Kinde-Analysis of a painting (

)
The
painting „Maria mit dem schlafenden Kinde“ created by Hans Baldung, called
Grien, in 1520. It is typical for the Renaissance because it is painted in a
very realistic way. It shows a young woman with a sleeping child on her arm.
The
background is completly red. In the foreground, you can see a woman who holds a
sleeping child. It is the centre of the painting. She wears a dark-blue hood
and underneath a see-trough veil. She has brown eyes and brown curls until her
breast. Her dress got v-neckline which is beige and the rest has the same dark-blue
colour like the hood. In the right bottom corner is her left hand. With the
left hand, she holds the baby and a purple length of material in both hands.
She is a little bit nourishing and has circumorbital rings. The baby is naked
and has blond curls. The woman looks towards in the emptiness. The picture just
shows a part of the woman. You can see her to head to waist. The colours ard
mor dark except the background, the artist painted it in dark-blue and purple
colours.
The cloth
is dark and looks very high-quality as a result, the woman is rich. Another
reason is, that she is a little nourishing consequently she has enough money
for good food. The difference between the red background and the centre of the
painting, the woman with her drak clothing, is huge. The artist wanted to
emphasize the woman even if she has no gloride or something like that. It is
nearby that the woman is the mother of the baby because they both have the same
nose and mouth. It is wierd that the rich woman holds the baby because according
to her clothing, she has enough money to get a nanny. Maybe the child is too
special that it is worth to carry about it herself. Her circumorbital rings
make her looking tired, maybe due to the baby cries at night. The child could
be Jesus because the title of the painting mentioned Maria, Jesus’ mother. That
is why the mother cares herself about the baby.
In
comparison to other typical Renaissance pictures, for example one of Filippo
Lippi paintings created between the 15
th and 16
thcentury, you can’t identify Maria exactly because there aren’t any real hints
for her holiness or the holiness of Jesus. So it’s difficicult to understand
the meaning of the painting. Without the title it’s nearly impossible.
