Analysing the form of the sentence

Anybody who wants to correct me if I am wrong?

Difference in form:

a) Sadly(A), he(S) just(A) shook(V) his head and remained silent(d.O)

b) He(S) just(A) shook(V) his head sadly and remained silent (d.O)

The obvious difference is the use of the word sadly, in different places. It changes the meaning.. But I am not sure if my analysis of the patterns are correct?

  • I think the difference in meaning you perceive has to do with fronting the manner adjunct in A and giving it end position (in the clause) in B.

Yes. It's a sentential adverb in the first case and a verb-phrase adverb in the second case. The sentential adverb tells us something about the speaker's attitude toward what happened. The verb-phrase adverb tells us how it happened.
