TRICKLE: GUSH::
A. breathe: exhale
B. amble: move
C. stain: blotch
D. warm: sear

It's obvious C, while the answer provided is D. I am puzzled. Although I stick to my own choice, I 'd better have your explanation. Thank you.

"trickle" has to do with a little bit (of water) at a time; "gush" has to do with quite a lot (of water) all at once. "warm" has to do with a little bit (of heat) at a time; "sear" has to do with quite a lot (of heat) all at once. I don't see any other answer that comes close to (D).

  • I think it would be better if you thought this over some more.
  • (C) doesn't seem right at all.

Thank you. CJ. But "blotch" seems to relate to big spot, while "stain" relates to small spot. Or they don't?

Dear CJ,

Where are you?

Here's the meanings of "stain" and "blotch" my dictionary give me.

stain--n.1:a small soiled or discolored area
v.1:to discolor, soil, or spot.
2:to bring into disrepute; taint or tarnish
...

blotch--n.a usu. large and irregular spot or mark (as of ink or color)
v. To mark

I went away for a while. I often do that!
Now I can see how you reached your conclusion based on those dictionary definitions.
If Answer D had not been present, I suppose the next best would have been C.
It's just that D leapt out at me.

D jumped out at me, too. I find your dictionary definition of 'stain' totally off-base because size has nothing to do with it.

Here's Merriam-Webster's:

1 : to suffuse with color
2 : DISCOLOR, SOIL
3 a : to taint with guilt,

Oh, really, Davkett? Actually I, too, didn't find "stain", when used as a verb, has anything to do with "size". Emotion: smile
