Analogy/dish & menu

MENU: DISH::
A. curriculum: course
B. manifest: cargo
C. agenda: meeting

(Choose the word pair that expresses a relationship most similar to that of the given capital pair.)

I don't know which one is the answer. All of them seem right.

Menus is a list of dishes;
curriculum is a group of courses;
manifest is a list of cargo;
agenda is a list of things to be done (meetings).

Top answer

I'd eliminate B since manifest is 'a list of cargo or passengers carried on a ship or plane' and menu is not 'a list of dished', but dishes are a means to implement the menu . I'd eliminate C as well since agenda is 'a list of things to be done, like meetings' so the relation is instant, direct, whereas courses are means to implement the curriculum as in the relation dishes:menu . menu is not 'a list of dishes'

Thank you.

But, menu is a list of the dishes (to be served or available for a meal).

And I don't get what you meant by "dishes are a means to

Ohh... there's a misconception here; the definition of dish may be unequivocal. You refered to dish as to 'the contents of a dish(plate)' (Webster) and I defined it as 'a more or less concave vessel from which food is served'. Try to see what I meant now.

B and C have a relation of [1] is a list of [2] whereas A and the formost pair are related to each other

This is a bit tricky. I submit that the answer is B.

A menu lists dishes

A manifest lists cargo

An agenda is not a list of meetings, but a list of topics for discussion at a meeting.

A curriculum is a course of study; a course catalog is a list of courses

For variety:

I'd choose A.

A menu is a list of the dishes available, from which you make your selection.

A curriculum is a list of the courses available, from which you make your selection.

But I'm taking 'curriculum' in the sense of Merriam-Webster's first definition, rather than the second:

Even if the issue is a list from which selection can be made, I'd have a little trouble still with curriculum, notwithstanding Merriam-Webster's ranking of 1 and 2. My university experience tells me that it is the curriculum (area of study) itself that is selected from the available university options, (art, medicine, engineering, animal husbandry) and once the curriculum is selected , mos

...I wonder where Jeff is getting these tricky ones...
I like to think of the strange, faraway people who set these questions, secure in the blithe delusion that there is indeed a 'correct answer'.

It must be a vastly comforting occupation.

I am not sure if this question is from a previous GRE real test, because I just copied it from a website for GRE preparation (where the poster did say he encountered in his GRE examination). But here is the one that is really from ETS.

PROGRAM: CONCERT::
A. bibliography: book
B. menu: entree
C. questionnaire: poll
D. platform: campaign
E.
0
The following line of reasoning is inclusive: Program = list of items to be performed in the Concert

Possibilities are:

C. Questionnaire= list of questions to be answered in the Poll

D. Platform= list of ideals to be espoused in the Campaign

E. Agenda = list of topics to be discuss

I checked the transcript. The answer is E. agenda: meeting. But your explanation seems impeccable. I really need to know how ETS views the question.
