Analogy

Here is a question nothing about grammar. (Sorry I was supposed to put it in the vocabulary board.)

ZEALOUS: ENTHUSIASTIC::
A. pedantic: educated
B. flamboyant: stylish
C. cautious: prudent
D. pious: virtuous
E. idolatrous: devoted

The given answer is E. I don't get it. Why is choice C not taken into account?

Hi Jeff,

I'm just a learner like you, but I'd like to take a stab at it.

Looks like the pairing contains two similar words, with the first word being a stronger version of the second. Zealous also implies something slightly excessive.

In this case, I think E is a good pick.

Just my 2 cents, by the way.

Looks like the pairing also has something to do with one's emotional state about something.

Just my 2 cents, again

Thank you! Now I got it. ‘Idolatrous’ IS concerning the excessive devotion to something.

As for the choice C, I just had a thought popped up. Could prudent be a stronger version of cautious like what you said, based on “prude” implying someone who is excessively concerned with app

Hi Jeff,

I am wondering if the pairing also has something to do with feelings (rather than our rational side, like being prudent)

A. pedantic: educated
B. flamboyant: stylish
C. cautious: prudent
D. pious: virtuous
E. idolatrous: devoted

She didn't have much time, and it was not prudent to be so cautious in answering the questions.
