"an" with a plural noun

Hi.

"The women who have had an epic 12 months." This is a headline from a BBC website. Why is there the indefinite article in front of a plural?

Thanks for your explanations.

It's because it isn't about 12 separate months; it's about the whole quantity of time, a year, but the person wrote it in months to dramatize how long a period of time it was.
