An unnecessary comma

I went to the movie thinking, this is gonna be stupid I just know it. But I was wrong.

I think "this is gonna be stupid I just know it" is the objective clause of "thinking."
So I'd like to know why the comma is inserted before "this."
Thank you in advance for your help.
