an S.A.P. ?

Requirements, and regulations to become an S.A.P.

In the above and throughout the article on the above heading it was mentioned as "an S.A.P". Even the grammar correction on the word suggests as "an S.A.P.".... Can someone please explain the use of "an " instead of "a"

Thanks

The choice between "a" and "an" depends on whether the following word begins with a vowel sound , not an actual vowel letter. P. is pronounced Ess Ay Pee, so it is preceeded by "an," just like the word "essay," which begins with the same sound.
