A(n) or the? Can you please explain a little bit?

1) He missed ____ gold in the high jump, but will get a second chance in the long jump.

2) The Smiths don’t usually like staying at hotels, but last summer they spent a few days at a very nice hotel by ___sea.

2) The Smiths don’t usually lik

1) He missed the gold medal in the high jump, but will get a second chance in the long jump. ( The indefinite article might also be a valid choice, but because there is only one gold medal awarded in the event, I would chose the definite article.)

You can say: He won gold in the high jump. (no article)
