An or the?

A teacher created a question for students to choose "between" an and "the". I can not figure out the answer and, worse still, cannot comprehend the sentence. Please help me!

If you have failed, calm down and think over how the failure has come and an/the attempt to adopt a good working attitude and a good thinking method.
