An or The?

The solidity and flexibility of those materials help the basket become (an) excellent shock absorber when the balloon actually lands and there is a large amount of force exerted on the basket.

I put down "an" before the word, excellent shock absorber,

but I'm not sure if it's correct.

Do I have to modify or not?
