Grammar

An or a

When writing an acronym that starts with a consonant that sounds like it starts with a vowel e.g. the letter 'm', should you use 'a' or 'an'.

Example. I took my car for an MOT test or I took my car for a MOT test.

When spoken, 'an' sounds better but the word clearly starts with a consonant. I have always written 'a' but have been told this is incorrect. Please advise.

Many thanks

Dave
