Vocabulary

An obviously weird question

I'm just curious,
do you guys call the names of different types of medical doctors IN SHORT FORMS such as "derms" and "OB/GYN"?
Because those medical terms can be really lengthy,
and obviously it's more convenient to shorten them in some certain cases to save time,
can anyone here provide a list of them?
I always find it troublesome that I have to say words as lengthy as ophthalmologist and otolaryngologist soooo frequently during some certain annoying season.

Top answer

We say OB/GYN. We say "eye doctor" more than opthamologist. We say "dermatologist" "ENT" is an ear, nose and throat specialist.

  • We say OB/GYN.
  • We say "eye doctor" more than opthamologist.
  • We say "dermatologist" "ENT" is an ear, nose and throat specialist.
  • We say "cardiologist" "endocrinologist" and other specialties are usually spelled out, unless it related to reproductive organs and then we get all bashful and abbreviate.
  • I live in California, so it could vary in different parts of the US.
