Hi, I would like some advises about how to improve my writing. I am preparing myself for TOEFL examination and need some help. Thanks in advance.
In our contemporary society, we usually link the education with how clever someone is. It is true that being clever facilitates the understanding of some topics and usually is accompanied by a natural tendency towards learning as a part of a process of discovering the world and applying the aforementioned intelligence. On the other hand, being clever is just a trait which does not necessarily imply that someone is willing to educate herself. Being diligent, meticulous and patient are some necessary qualities. On the way of educating ourselves, our behavior changes. People who are educated usually are more polite. Someone could argue that it is not necessary to be polite in order to be educated. On the other hand, I will always remember how my father insisted on developing a good character through the education instead of limiting myself into just grasping and memorizing some technical stuff about how the world works. We should not neglect the other aspect of the topic; whether an educated person is an intelligent one. Sometimes, education comes with arrogance if someone does not realize how little does he know. Nevertheless, if this person is clever enough to know with impotency as Socrates once told: "One thing I know, that I know nothing", I guess he passes the threshold of being characterized as a clever one. In many aspects of our life we are able to observer that time is often substituted by memory. An easy example of this is the chess games of great player and their training which mostly consists of learning about new lines, as they are called in the slang of chess, and new moves. Being clever sure facilitates this process, but it can be substituted. Nevertheless, we should not accept this as an undeniable truth, since memory itself can be substituted by technological means like the Internet which is a gigantic pool of information, restoring the original question and doubting about whether being intelligent can be substituted by knowledge. If we alter the definition of the educated person and make it large enough in order to include the traits of being polite, without hard feelings and having known the main aspects of the social system, then being intelligent seems like a promise or a potential if you prefer of being an educated person someday. Concluding, the dilemma between being intelligent vs being educated is hard to be addressed in a few lines. Some could argue that being intelligent is all you need to succeed what you need, but on the other hand it sounds more like a promise rather than an actual fact.
