An inserted clause

Recent advance in the ability to record electrical activity in the brain have yielded further information on the brain's involvement in language. Before young children begin speaking, brain wave activity as they listen to words they comprehend is distributed across many region of the brain.

I think in the underlined clause "as" means "while," and that "as they listen to words they comprehend" is inserted into the middle of the main clause.
I'd like to know if my thought is right.
