An indefinite article/ definite article

Research shows that smoking during pregnancy can permanently damage a baby's health. Children of smokers, for example, tend to have more respiratory infections throughout their lives. Clearly, mothers-to-be who smoke should try to cut back or quit. They should also be careful about the type of exercise they do.

I think although "type" is modified by "of" prepositional phrase, because readers don't know what type of exercise the author says, the definite article should be replaced by the indefinite article.
And I'd like to know what you think about this.

You are confusing grammar with real life. The specific exercise is the exercise that they do: that is clear enough for grammar.
