I think the underlined words mean "I just know the tip of the iceberg"(very little about it)

but I also want it to convery that "I only know the common things about it,not an expert")

I don't think " I only know the surface of it" sounds ok, even to me.

The only proverb I can think of which might come close is, "It would be like the blind leading the blind."
