An 'idiom' I guess which i don't understand

Kant, the German philosopher, said this.....

'Act in such a way that the maxims of your will at any time can be taken at the same time as the principle of a universal legislation,"

'Make sure the principles on which your actions are based would be good enough to turn into a law for everyone to follow.'

Or:

'Think to yourself: what would happen if everyone were required to act as I am about to act?'

Before you do anything, ask yourself, "What would the world be like if everybody acted like this?"
