An hotel or a hotel?

An hotel or a hotel?... Also: An historic or a historic?

What is the reasoning behind it?

I suppose it would depend on which dialect of English you were speaking. In most American dialects (if not all) the initial /h/ in hotel and historic would be pronounced. ' However, in formal written English, I believe you would always use 'a' with hotel and historic.

So we would say 'a hotel' and 'a historic event.' If the dialect demands that you don't pronounce the /h/ in hotel and historic then you would use 'an.' However, in formal written English, I believe you would always use 'a' with
