An extra +plural

Hi,

Why is the word extra used with plural nouns as in:
-Get an extra 20 minutes of sleep?
''an extra 20 minutes'' is what is bugging me.
Also, 'do you have a spare 10 minutes?'

How would it work in this instance?
- Get an extra 20-minute nap? Is that correct?

Thanks
