An extra 10000 places vs 10000 extra places

Hi,

In July, the government awarded universities an extra 10,000 places on maths, science, engineering and technology courses.

What is the difference between "an extra 10000 places" and "10000 extra places"?

Thanks in advance

There is barely any difference between the two. Nevertheless, the phrasing an extra suggests and emphasizes that all 10,000 were awarded in a single action of some kind. It also suggests that all 10,000 are alike in some way, that they belong together in a single group.

  • Saying 10,000 extra places doesn't convey the grouping as strongly, and may be seen as 10,000 individual, separate places not necessarily very related to one another.
