An expression from an article in a newspaper

Hi everybody!

I'm reading an article from The Guardian and there's an expression which I find quite strange: "You would be seen as a grass and disowned by the whole community."

Could somebody please tell me what does it mean? I was looking in dictionaries and even asked Google but no results so far...
