Essay & Composition Writing

an essay on GRE issue, please help me correct it

ISSUE38 - "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it

once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by

reading books."

Does reading books really become less important than before because people

can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books since

the invention of television? I do agree that television has changed the way

of learning for individuals because of its inherent talent to display the

reality, but this statement is not proper and precise, in third respects.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

First of all, television cannot give us all things that we can get from

books. As known to all, books has a history as long as several thousands

years when reading books is the most primary approach to obtain knowledge. In

contrast, television's history is no longer than one century.Understandably,

we cannot put all things into a TV set by only 100 years. A striking example

is that when a graduate is preparing his/her thesis on Thermodynamics, no

tutor would tell him/her to watch TV, and of course he/she would go the

library to look for the right book that related to the subject. In addition,

books are more powerful and subtly on expressing Hyman emotion. That's why

most people think that fiction is always more interesting and impressive than

teleplay.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Secondly, in many occasions, reading books are more convenient and available.

When power cut occurs, TV station won't work, so TV is useless this moment

and reading books is a better choice to learn something. On the side, most

people would like to take some books along on a trip but a TV set.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thirdly, television amount to a double-edged sword that could also impede

learning. The original purpose of inventing TV is to transmit news. However,

in contemporary life, people tend to look TV as a sort of tool of

entertainment. According to a recent survey, a growing number of adolescent

spend at least 1.5 hours per day on watching dramas or shows to kill time.

Consequently, the time of study has decreased and what's worse is that

teenagers have been infused money worship that advocated on TV. On the other

hand, watching TV makes people lack of time to communicate so that

psychological barriers in communication has become a noticeable problem all

over the world. Thus, in order to utilize TV in reason we must notice its

harmful respect.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To sum up, television has been indispensable to contemporary life, but books

are still as important as any time in history.
