An essay on "artists vs. scientists"

Hello,

I wrote another essay on whose contribution to society is more valued – the one of artists or the one of scientists. I will be much appreciated if you take a look and point out some errors. Any critique is welcome.

Essay:

Both scientists and artists fulfil various society needs. However, results of whose activities are more valuable depends on the needs and interests of a particular person or group. Though, some products of art and science are consumed by every person with no regards to one's interests.

One of these products provided by science is medicine. Each person from the cradle to the grave regularly consumes pharmaceutical industry's products and uses services of doctors. And it is almost impossible for one to abstain from using these products, since human health, and in some cases life, depend on them.

The analogously important product of art are non-scientific books. The society's dependence on them is not too strong and obvious in comparison with dependance on medicine, however almost each person in any community reads fiction finding it necessary for one's life.

One more product of science, which contemporary people don't imagine their lives without, is communication technologies, and the mobile phone as a particular mean of communication. If it were offered to any person either not to use one's mobile phone or not to visit a theater for a month, I am sure, that almost every person whould easily refrain from going to the theater, while only a minority whould abstain with ease from mobile phone usage.

Some products of science, also very important and high valued by most people, can easily compete with products of art. For instance, a person may not have an automobile, but visit theatres, art galleries, and ballet every day of the week, finding it more necessary for oneself. Though, another person may not be able to imagine one's day without using a computer, while easily refraining from ever visiting any concerts.

So, if summarize each product's importance for a particular group of people, it appears that both products of art and science are considered to be important, but people more strongly depend on products of science, which makes these products somewhat more valuable. However, it is necessary to take into account that products of art exert a great influence on all humans activities, including scientific activities, and help scientists to create. I suppose, many scientific inventions were made under impression of some artistic work: a book, a play, or a painting. So, it would be unsensible not to take into account this non-apparent, but quite significant factor while deciding whose work is more valuable.

Thanks in advance.
