Then Gouin drew illogic of GTM from his own experiences. Learning from a series of sentences or images were very effective and the way of teaching was easy to be visualized or memorized. What I just cannot understand is that though it had a weak theoretical foundations, it was obviously effective and had very few limitations. Why was the method unable to be last long? Only because Gouin lost his insights in the shuffle of Berlitz's Direct Method? I doubt that.

Based on the Series Method, understanding English without translation was the main principle of Direct Method. I totally agree that learning English should be the same way of learning mother tongue. However, in terms of class size, budget and native teachers, it was hard to be adapted to public schools. Besides, inductive grammar teaching made students confuse and struggle themselves.

Audio-lingual Method which pursued students stating error-free sentences was criticized by Communicative Language Teaching. The book says that ALM's major demerit is mechanical memorization and overlearning which cannot be reached to the real world communication. But I want to put more importance on the way of treating errors. The viewpoint of CLT, making errors is a part of learning process. I remembered the time when I was harshly punished after giving a wrong answer to teacher. It was a humiliating moment I've ever had in my English class. If I hadn't had intrinsic motivation to learn English, I would have not studied English from that time. Teachers should be careful not to invade 'affective domain' of learner's.

Originated from the 'affective domain', CLL seems similar to Direct Method in terms of teacher's ability. As a counselor of students, teacher translate what the student say in their mother tongue. Then make student state the sentence which the teacher just translated. The quality of class is thus mainly depends on the teacher's translating skill. In other words, teacher have to have a fluency in English like native speakers.

For me, being a teacher in Silent Way class where the teacher's silence is one of it's merits, I would be impatient to teach what they are misunderstanding or to give correct answers.

Total Physical Response, which I think the least useful among the methods, seems only effective to those who just started learning. In my viewpoint, not stating a word, a phrase, or a sentence is not a learning. This method might be appropriate for the preschoolers at home. The role of teacher would be held by their mothers.
