An essay about/on

Hello everyone,

Which preposition would you use in: "What's your essay about/on?" I've seen both, so neither would surprise me. I think I'd say "an essay on Hamlet", but "an essay on the meaning/importance of (something). They could probably be swapped around, so that's just a suggestion.
