An essay about cross-cultural communication

Today, the world has been highly globalized and this tendency is most likely to continue. In such a society, people with different cultural backgrounds interact with each other not only in daily life but also in business settings. Consequently, it is inevitable for varying degrees of conflicts to occur.

Imagine a situation where Japanese people and American have an important meeting. Since Japan is a high-context society, the Japanese businesspeople are likely to avoid stating their opinions clearly and expect others to pick up the subtext. This attitude may strike their American counterparts, who were brought up in a low-context culture, as indecisive and even irresponsible. In contrast, how the American businesspeople assert their opinions may seem inconsiderate and even rude to their Japanese counterparts.

To prevent this kind of misunderstanding, we should all keep in mind that our way of doing things is not the only way. In fact, it is of great importance to become more familiar with different cultural norms and learn to respect them.

It can also be said that making necessary compromises is the key to successful cross-cultural communication, especially when business activities are conducted in another country. As the saying goes, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.”
