an error recognition question

which is wrong?

"What happened at Kent State in 1970 were the result of the president's order to invade Cambodia."

I think the answer is "were", but is there really anything wrong with it?

Was. What happened is (presumably) a single event. Were would require recasting: The events that happened at Kent State...were.
