Vocabulary

an english idiom that refers to unexpected

I need an english idiom which means "unexpected". Normally you expect high potential with high risk but in this concept high potential comes with low risk? Which idioms can I use for this meaning? If it refers to financial terms it's going to be super!

There are several terms that denote an unexpected event. However, many of them suggest a shock of some kind (a bolt from the blue, being blind sided, being caught napping/off-guard, etc). I think you want to say a pleasant surprise (not a bad one).

  • So, I would stick with one of the more neutral terms, such as unforeseen, surprisingly, paradoxically, astonishingly.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I want to say a pleasant surprise. But these words are adverbs: unforeseen, surprisingly, paradoxically, astonishingly
I need an idiom or more.

You can also use those words as adjectives (unforeseen, surprising, astonishing, paradoxical).
If you want a more idiomatic expression for unexpected, I suggest "eye-opening," or, perhaps "a real bombshell" (of a result).

A sudden, unforeseen benefit can be described as a "windfall." (The wind blows the apples right off the tree, you don't have to do the work of picking them.)

windfall is great, thanks
