So I was doing my guitar solo
and then an elephant joined in on the drums.

That said, I have never heard of a musical instrument called an elephant. This does not mean that there is not one, especially considering the new electronic devices that make music these days. Something called an elephant may very well exist in recording studios, etc.
My guess, however, is that "elephant" refers to a person who joined in playing

It means the animal. However, it's a deliberately nonsensical sentence to prove that the boy isn't paying attention to the conversation he's supposedly having with the girl.
