An effort or efforts?

Which pattern is more preferable?

It is wrong to think that there is no need to make (an effort/efforts) to express your opinions clearly.

I know that "effort" can be either countable or uncountable depending on each case. But I am not sure about this particular case. Could you explain to me a little bit about it?
