An earthquake + hit/strike/attack?

Howdy,

This sentence comes from English Advanced Vocabulary book. I'm wondering about the difference between... :
  1. hit
  2. strike (and attack as well actually)
...in the following string of words:

Earthquakes are amongst the most destructive natural disasters. They usually _____ (hit/strike/attack) without any warning.

I'd pick strike or hit but the answer key gives merely one option, i.e. strike. Why do you think that is so?

Thanks

'Strike' probably collocates more popularly with 'earthquake', but there is nothing wrong with 'hit'.
