An asset vs assets

An excerpt from an email:

"We are confident they will be successful and an asset to our team!"

My contention is that, since we are discussing multiple people, asset should be pluralized. Reading:

"We are confident they will be successful and assets to our team!"

I am hoping someone can clear this up for me.
