An article

Quotation from a morning newspaper:

(Don't mind its content lol)

"Paris Hilton spent a week at a luxurious Caribbean beach resort with boyfriend Doug Reinhart."

Why is there no article in front of "boyfriend"?

Is it a mistake or is it because his name is mentioned later?

Thanks for replies.

The name may indeed be the reason why the journalist opted to omit her before boyfriend . , though, and therefore I would use her before it, not an article. CB

Almost any kind of role can go without the article when the name follows. This is typical in journalistic style.

... went to a beach resort with [designer Jake Robinson / author Winsome / dancer Fred Meldov].

Because of space limitations headline writers can (and often do) ignore the rules. This particular headline, for example, could just as easily have been written something like this:
"Paris Hilton spent week at luxurious Caribbean beach resort with boyfriend."

It was not a headline, it was an article itself and there was a lot of space next to a big picture of our celebrity.
