The diagrams illustrate how the layout of an art gallery in Australia has been changed from 1950 up to now.
Overall, it is clear that significant changes were made in terms of the use of floor space in the gallery. Noticeably, there have been a completely new toilet and more space for exhibitions.
Looking at the pictures in more detail, we can see that there was a courtyard in the north of the building in 1950. However, this outdoor courtyard has now been converted into a functional part of the building’s internal structure, and divided into three different areas with the same size: an art school for children, an Australian Aboriginal Art gallery and a room for Australian Art. At the same time, in place of the original Australian Art space, which is shown on the first diagram, the existing plan shows a new Asian Art area.
The café in the redeveloped gallery is about half as large as it was in 1950. This size reduction is to make way for a new toilet which it has been built on the place of the former cafe and is located to the left. Finally, no changes have been made to the entrance and the remaining four areas of the gallery.
