Both are OK. Here are a couple of comments.



the amused Dr. Hsi Probably the more common way to say it. Conveys no special attitude. Simply states the fact that Dr. Hsi was a

I would use "an". I tend to think of "the" with proper names as an indicator of a permanent characteristic: the distinguished Dr. Hsi, the accomplished Dr. Hsi. I think of "a" with proper names as an indicator of a passing mood or emotion: an amused Dr. Hsi, a grief-stricken Dr. Hsi
