An analysis of a sentence

If you grew up in the United States, you probably are a coffee or tea drinker. But if you spend some time in the countries of Paraquay, Brazil, or Argentina, you're likely to come away with a taste for a drink called mate.

I think if the author had targeted the world market, he would have used the conditional 2?"if You had grown up~,"
but he didn't.
So I think he targeted the US market.
I'd like to know if my assumption is right.
