Grammar

An ambiguous grammatical issue

It is possible that science may in principle describe the structure and actions of man as a part of physical nature.
It is clear, however, that man is not thus completely accounted for. Left wholly out of consideration is the realm of ideas
and idealism, of understanding and emotion, that gives life its human significance.

1) In the above sentence, what role does the adverb 'thus' play?

2) If the phrase 'of understanding and emotion' is inserted phrase, the underlined word 'that' is non-restrictive relative pronoun and any grammatical problem doesn't occur, but as the phrase 'of ideas and idealism' and the phrase 'of understanding and emotion' form a perfect parallel relationship, It is difficult for me to treat 'of understanding and emotion' as a inserted phrase.
If the phrase 'of ideas and idealism' and the phrase 'of understanding and emotion' form a perfect parallel relationship, the word 'that' become restrictive relative pronoun and grammatical problem occur. Emotion: sweating

What do you think about that?
I'd like to hear your opinion.
In addition, even though two parallel phrases isn't connected through 'or' or 'and', Is it no matter?
Thank you in advance for your help

e. man is not completely accounted for by this scientific explanation. 2) It means "the realm of [ [ideas and idealism] and [understanding and emotion] ] that gives life its human significance".

  • e.
  • man is not completely accounted for by this scientific explanation.
  • 2) It means "the realm of [ [ideas and idealism] and [understanding and emotion] ] that gives life its human significance".
  • The omission of "and" is a stylistic choice probably taken because there are already enough "and"s.
  • To me the relative clause feels non-restrictive.

1) "thus" means "in the way just described", i.e. man is not completely accounted for by this scientific explanation.

2) It means "the realm of [ [ideas and idealism] and [understanding and emotion] ] that gives life its human significance". The omission of "and" is a stylistic choice probably taken because there are already enough "and"s. To me the relative clause feels non-restrictive.

Right, without the comma before "that", the "that" clause would modify only "understanding and emotion".

Thank you, GPY, for your simple but distinct answer
I think the comma usage in English is very difficult to non-native speakers
