Vocabulary

An alternate player (= substitution player?)

An alternate is a person or thing that replaces another, and can act or be used instead of them.

I found that definition in my dictionary. But I also found 'AmE' in the definition.

Q) An alternate player = a substitution(sub) player? [in soccer or other sports]

In BrE, only substitute (or sub for short) is used in football (soccer) and other sports. I have only heard the noun alternate used in US court contexts, for replacement jurors who stand in when necessary. Rover
