An afternoon

Hello everyone,

1. Could you tell me what does "an afternoon" means in the foowing statement? I think the following noun is ommited but it's understood by you, but to me, deciphering its meaning is difficult on its own.

- Let's give the men an afternoon on the island. Provided that most of them go ashore with Silver - you'll see - he'll bring them back as quietly as sheep.

2. In the second sentence the word "sheep" has been used figuratively, but could you tell me what "sheep" means here?

Source; Treasure Island, chapter "We arrive at the island- how my adventure on shore began"

Regards,

JA
