An "a" v.s. "the" dilemma

Hi,

I think I came across both versions at one time or another, and I'm not sure which one sounds about right:

"The American inventor Thomas Edison gave life to a lot of useful things".

"American inventor Thomas Edison gave life to a lot of useful things".

Could you tell me which version (if any) does not grate the native ear, so to speak? Emotion: smile)

Thanks !
