Vocabulary

amount to vs in total

Please have a look at this sentence:

The two cargos amount to 100 tons in total.

It seems to me that "in total" is redundant here because "amount to" implies it is the total number. In other words, "amount to" and "in total" should not be used at the same time.

Please could someone kindly clarify this?

Thanks

  • The wording you are quoting seems to me to be standard and common business jargon.
  • However, I rather agree with you, although perhaps 'in total' makes it clearer that 100 tons is the weight of both cargos together, rather than the weight of each?

No, I would use "in total," to clarify this is the total weight for both.

Confusions aren't allowed in business correspondence, where clarity is more important than style.
