Amount or number (with audience)

Hi

Do we say amount of audience or number of audience? Google seems to support both versions. Also, should I use "out" in the following sentence or not?

As the lights were turned on and I was able to see the amount/number of the audience, my self confidence went out for a walk.

Is the above sentence natural? Any suggestion is welcome.

Thanks,

Tom
